Distribution channels P4 (a)

Meaning & Purpose

The meaning of distribution channels for artists under record labels is actually very similar to advertising; it is essentially how the musicians will attempt to reach out to their intended audiences, and what they use in order to do so. It is important we learn about the distribution channels..

In terms of distribution and how my chosen media reaches its intended audience, again I am choosing to use one example artist who is signed to my chosen major record company, Columbia. The reason being again of course is I think attempting to narrow down the company as a whole would be very difficult; and their main aim is to advertise themselves through their artists anyway, which is something they have been extremely successful with over the years - they have signed some very famous recording artists, ever since the foundation of the label!

The artist I will use who is signed to Columbia Records (the mother company) is George Ezra; he is an example of one of the very successful artists Columbia have been lucky enough to take on board, and has proved to be very likeable, charismatic, and good live. In the last year he has filmed a music video with Ian McKellen, recorded an album under Columbia Records and won several awards for his writing, as well as performing live hundreds of times on the road. But, of course he has to have advertised himself in order to get where he is today..

For example, the radio play him a lot (in particular the mainstream ones, such as BBC Radio One); this in itself proves extremely helpful and is excellent exposure for any new artist looking for publicity. Radio stations such as Radio One get on average 10.4 million listeners a week! The screenshot below is when Ezra participated in live lounge for the BBC, a very popular segment of the show where artists come and sing their songs and a cover; just in participating in events like this, presumably set up by his management and the record label, means 100,000's of people are able to hear him every day.

George Ezra is also very active on social media websites such as Twitter; he promotes his shows on the site regularly, so that fans everywhere are also able to get down to a gig just incase they hadn't heard about it previously (however what with his growing popularity, most of his shows now sell out extremely quickly due to huge demand, and because of this he's actually toured a huge number of other countries as well as the UK). He posts the occasional funny tweet too though, in order to fully relate to his fans; many people find his twitter funny and this can lead to people taking a liking to him too, which again is great, if not subtle promotion for his music.

Ezra also partook in his biggest UK tour to date in February 2015; he played iconic venues such as Brixton 02 Academy, Colston Hall in Bristol, etc.

Distribution channels can even go as far as to be on television networks, cinemas and even international places; of course the main goal for an artist signed to a record label like Columbia Records is for them to reach out to people all across the world; so when an album is released (etc), depending on how the record label is willing to pay for the adverts, distribution to the fans can spread across the whole world.
