Advertising P4 (b)

Meaning & Purpose

The meaning of this tab is very simple; it means how do the artists (in terms of the music industry and record labels such as Columbia Records), advertise themselves - do they do it effectively? And where do they do it? Social media? Posters? Badges?
I believe that it is important we continue to learn about advertising because not only could it come in handy in the future, but it also allows us to develop a better understand of how signed artists are able to effectively appeal to audiences of all ages, and not just the fans who they know will come to shows/buy singles etc.

The key to good advertising a record label might set up for one of their artists, is that it has to be eye catching! And adverts come in many different shapes and sizes too; for example, you can watch an advert for a band's tour on YouTube or the TV. These are all shot and uploaded for the musician, usually in order to promote their music properly

The three videos you see above are all from the band The Script, and are perfect examples of what Columbia Records recorded and put out for them. in order to promote their first album, debut single and third single back in 2008. These videos would have appeared in particular on music channel on TV, but also most likely other, more mainstream channels too, such as ITV. They also of course would have been posted on all of the Script's social media, and appeared as adverts on YouTube. They must be 30 seconds or less and be interesting enough for people to pay attention; I believe these videos do the job perfectly! Columbia Records did a very good job at adverting the debuts from The Script.

Artists who are signed to Columbia Records are also able to advertise themselves effectively, both through the record label and by means of other methods too. The artists are able to promote their music in a number of different ways in order for people to get to know them as much as possible; not just by video.

An advert for one of the Script's tours, a one they embarked on I believe in 2013.

An advert in the form of a poster, for the Script's third album, 'Number Three'.

These two adverts are also for the Script, and I assume sorted for them by the record label again; physical advertising is just as important as digital ones you find on social media (such as tweets about the album with a link to iTunes on it, etc). With the choice of adverts above, you can find the posters and flyers in particular around venues the bands play, but also nowadays there are also bid adverts posted in tube stations around London, train stations, and out and about in big cities! All of the adverting does definitely prove to be effective too for the band/artist, and again is a very sensible move by the record label, like Columbia Records. Without the promotion, the artists of course would not be as big as they are today; it takes a lot of advertising to make a difference but it definitely works well!

Of course, websites also contain key advertising for the bands, but people must know where to look for the websites first, which the physical adverts deal with well. You also get billboards, which can be spotted around London and other major cities, as well as other cross media. The Script, under Columbia Records, have always been very good at promoting their music/tours.
